Greater flexibility in sensor integration
The new HAL 13xy family from TDK-Micronas addresses exactly these requirements. Based on the company’s proven 3D Hall technology, the factory-programmable dual-output Hall-effect switch sensors simultaneously measure two orthogonal magnetic field components.
This provides a significant advantage for designers: sensors and magnets can be positioned far more flexibly than with conventional Hall switches. Integrated quadrature outputs with a 90° phase shift remain stable regardless of air-gap variations or magnet pole spacing. As a result, motor and encoder designs become easier to implement, while calibration and development efforts are reduced.
Safety and robustness for modern drive systems
Functional safety and reliability are becoming increasingly important, particularly in automotive applications. The HAL 13xy family has therefore been specifically designed for demanding environments.
Integrated safety and protection features include:
- Continuous Built-In Self-Test (BIST)
- Short-circuit and thermal protection
- Reverse-voltage protection up to -18 V
- 40 V load-dump robustness
- SEooC ASIL-B readiness according to ISO 26262
- AEC-Q100 qualification for automotive applications
In addition, high EMC robustness in accordance with relevant ISO and IEC standards ensures reliable operation even in electromagnetically challenging environments.
Designed for the next generation of electric actuators
Thanks to configurable dual outputs, the sensors can provide either quadrature signals for speed sensing or speed/direction signals. This makes them ideally suited for compact motor-control and encoder applications.
Typical use cases include:
- Window lifters with anti-pinch functionality
- Seat and steering-column adjustment systems
- Sunroof motors
- Tailgate drives
- Valve-position sensing
- Steering turn-count sensing
Beyond automotive systems, the HAL 13xy family also enables applications in robotics, smart-home devices, and industrial automation equipment where precise motion control is required within limited space.
From automotive to robotics
The ongoing electrification of vehicles, the growing use of intelligent actuators, and the trend toward increasingly compact drive systems are driving demand for robust and space-saving sensing solutions.
Combining 3D Hall technology, integrated quadrature functionality, outstanding robustness, and automotive-grade qualification, the HAL 13xy family provides a future-ready platform for modern motion-control applications – from electric vehicles and smart-home devices to industrial robotics.
