Door 24 – Murata Type 2NR Module
Bluetooth® LE 6 / IEEE 802.15.4 IoT Module – Ultra-Low Power, Ultra-Small, Highly Integrated
On today‘s Advent Calendar Door – the last one for this year – we want to give you a sneak peak into a new module launching in Q1 2026: Murata Type 2NR Module based on Nordic Semiconductor‘s nRF54L15 SoC.
The Murata Type 2NR (LBMA0ZZ2NR) is a next-generation wireless connectivity module designed to meet the evolving demands of the Internet of Things (IoT). Built around the Nordic nRF54L15 system-on-chip (SoC), it integrates a powerful Arm® Cortex®-M33 processor, advanced security features, and multi-protocol radio support into an exceptionally compact footprint. With dimensions of only 7.4 × 7.0 × 1.0 mm, the Type 2NR is engineered for applications where space is at a premium, yet performance and reliability cannot be compromised. Integrated with a ceramic antenna, RF matching circuit, DC/DC inductor and crystal oscillator, the Type 2NR reduces the need for external components and simplifies the design. This level of integration allows developers to shorten development cycles and reduce bill-of-materials costs while ensuring consistent RF performance across devices.
Wireless Protocols
The Type 2NR supports a wide range of wireless standards, making it a versatile choice for multi-protocol IoT ecosystems:
- Bluetooth® 6 / Bluetooth Low Energy (LE): Includes advanced features such as Channel Sounding, which improves location accuracy and reliability in dense environments.
- IEEE 802.15.4: Enables Thread and Zigbee networking, both widely used in smart home and industrial automation.
- Matter over Thread: Provides seamless interoperability across smart home devices, aligning with the latest industry standards.
- NFC-A Tag: Allows for simple device pairing, commissioning, and secure authentication.
- Proprietary Nordic 2.4 GHz modes for custom low-power wireless applications.
Certification and Compliance
Murata has designed the Type 2NR with global compliance in mind. FCC and IC certification testing is underway, with CE and TELEC expected to follow. This ensures that developers can integrate the module into products destined for international markets without facing lengthy certification processes.
Power Efficiency
One of the defining characteristics of the Type 2NR is its ultra-low power consumption:
- Transmit (TX): ~5 mA at 0 dBm output power
- Receive (RX): ~3.2 mA at 1 Mbps
- Sleep Mode: ~3 µA at 3 V supply
These figures make the module ideal for battery-powered devices that require long operational lifetimes, such as wearables, sensors, and portable consumer electronics.
Applications
The versatility of the Type 2NR makes it suitable for numerous IoT applications:
- Smart Home: Matter-enabled lighting, sensors, and controllers
- Wearables: Fitness trackers, health monitoring devices, and compact consumer gadgets
- Industrial IoT: Wireless sensors, asset tracking, and predictive maintenance systems
- Consumer Electronics: Devices requiring reliable short-range connectivity in a small form factor
