Door 17 – Nordic Dev Academy

Nordic Dev Academy – an interactive online learning platform for developers

The Nordic Developer Academy is an interactive, online learning platform created by Nordic Semiconductor to help developers gain the technical knowledge and practical skills required to build wireless products using Nordic’s solutions. The Academy is designed to provide a smooth onboarding experience for both beginners and experienced developers, offering a wide range of self-paced courses and structured learning paths that cover the essential wireless technologies in Nordic’s portfolio, including Bluetooth Low Energy, Cellular IoT, and Wi-Fi.

Key Features and Offerings

Comprehensive Curriculum: The Academy features a carefully designed curriculum with well-defined learning paths. These paths guide learners through foundational concepts up to advanced topics, ensuring a thorough understanding of both hardware and software aspects of Nordic’s products. The courses are kept up to date and are suitable for all skill levels, from students and makers to professional embedded software engineers and firmware developers.

Self-Paced, Hands-On Courses: All courses are self-paced and available online for free, allowing learners to study at their own convenience from anywhere. The courses include hands-on exercises, practical projects, and real-world examples to reinforce learning and accelerate the development process.

Learning Paths: The Academy organizes its content into three main learning paths: Bluetooth LE, Cellular IoT, and Wi-Fi. Each path consists of a series of courses that can be taken in any order, but it is highly recommended to start with the nRF Connect SDK Fundamentals course to build a strong foundation in firmware development using Nordic’s unified software development kit.

Express Courses: In addition to the main learning paths, the Academy offers express courses - concise, self-contained modules designed for rapid onboarding on specific topics. For example, the nRF54L Series Express course provides a quick introduction to the nRF54L Series hardware architecture and capabilities.

Expert Guidance: Courses are developed and maintained by domain experts at Nordic Semiconductor, ensuring that the content is accurate, relevant, and aligned with the latest technology and best practices.

Community and Support: By registering for an account, users can receive notifications about new courses and updates, helping them stay current with the latest developments in Nordic’s ecosystem.

Mission and Impact

The mission of the Nordic Developer Academy is to accelerate learning and reduce time to market for developers working with Nordic’s wireless technologies. By providing a single, accessible platform with all necessary resources, the Academy helps developers quickly get up to speed, avoid common pitfalls, and build robust, future-proof IoT products. The Academy has already enrolled thousands of developers worldwide and continues to expand its offerings to meet the evolving needs of the IoT industry.

nRF Connect SDK Fundamentals Course

This course introduces the essentials of firmware development using the nRF Connect SDK and covers foundational Zephyr RTOS concepts. You will learn about the Zephyr execution model, interrupts, threads, thread life-cycle, and inter-task communication/synchronization mechanisms. The course also includes hands-on exercises using common hardware peripherals and teaches how to describe hardware using devicetree and configure software modules using Kconfig.

nRF Connect SDK Intermediate Course

This course goes beyond the basics, diving deeper into Zephyr RTOS topics such as thread management, data passing, kernel options, and task scheduling with different real-time constraints. It also covers debugging, custom board support, device driver development, and secure device firmware updates. The course features hands-on exercises to practice creating threads, exchanging data, and working with Zephyr’s kernel features.

Wireless Fundamental Courses

In between of the nRF Connect SDK Courses, Nordic provides comprehensive courses that encompass three distinct leaning paths: Bluetooth Low Energy, Cellular IoT and Wi-Fi technologies. Besides those courses, Nordic has the nRF54L Series Express Course available for a quick onboarding of the new short-range wireless series.
