nRF Cloud powered by Memfault – Nordic‘s chip-to-cloud lifecycle management solution
What is nRF Cloud powered by Memfault?
Nordic Semiconductor, a leader in low-power wireless solutions, has expanded its ecosystem with nRF Cloud powered by Memfault, a platform designed to simplify the lifecycle management of connected devices. This service merges Nordic’s established nRF Cloud Service infrastructure with Memfault’s proven device observability and remote debugging technology, creating a full device observability, device management, and location services for all its Cellular, Bluetooth LE and Wi-Fi customers.
What is nRF Cloud?
nRF Cloud is Nordic’s IoT cloud platform that provides:
- Device management – Secure onboarding, configuration, monitoring, and firmware-over-the-air (FOTA) updates
- Security Services – Identity management, secure provisioning, and encrypted communication
- Location Services – GNSS, Wi‑Fi SSID-based positioning, and cellular‑based positioning, including assistance and prediction data
The Role of Memfault
Memfault, acquired by Nordic in 2025, is a cloud platform specializing in observability, debugging, and OTA updates for large-scale deployments. Its integration into nRF Cloud brings:
- Remote Debugging: Developers can capture and analyze crashes, performance bottlenecks, and firmware issues directly from deployed devices
- OTA Infrastructure: Streamlined firmware updates across fleets of devices, ensuring security patches and feature rollouts happen seamlessly
- Lifecycle Management: End-to-end visibility and control over devices, from development to production
The combination of both allows Nordic to offer a complete chip-to-cloud lifecycle management platform. It gives users out-of-the-box access to remote diagnostics, fleet health monitoring, and secure updates across not only Nordic’s nRF91 Series of cellular IoT modules, but also the nRF54, nRF53 and nRF52 Series’ of multiprotocol wireless SoCs. To get started. developers can test the nRF Cloud Services with all its features for free for the first 10 devices and scale efficiently in pricing for larger amounts of devices.
Device management and OTA
nRF Cloud provides device management for any Nordic SoC/SiP, including:
- Secure, scalable OTA update management and delivery – for firmware updates throughout the fleet’s lifecycle
- Configuration and provisioning – services to provision devices and adjust their configuration in the field
- Operational status visibility – e.g., current firmware versions and configuration status per device
These OTA and management capabilities are powered by Memfault’s underlying device‑side SDK and cloud infrastructure, integrated into nRF Cloud. For nRF91 Series in particular, Nordic also provides additional security services (identity and remote provisioning) on nRF Cloud, enabling secure OTA provisioning without managing keys in manufacturing.
Device observability
Device Observability in nRF Cloud gives developers a real‑time view of device behavior in the field:
- Automatic capture of logs, metrics, and coredumps, even when devices are offline.
- Fleet‑level monitoring with tools to spot trends and anomalies.
- Historical performance and advanced search per device.
- Alerts on performance changes and new faults.
- AI‑based comparison of performance between firmware versions.
These capabilities match Memfault’s strengths (continuous metrics, coredumps, logs, fleet dashboards) and are reported as being available inside nRF Cloud as part of the powered‑by‑Memfault experience.
Location Services
While not strictly Memfault‑specific, Location Services are part of the same nRF Cloud platform. You can combine:
- Positioning via assisted GNSS, predicted GNSS, Wi‑Fi SSID-based positioning, and cellular
- With device management and observability flows to build location‑aware, monitored, and remotely managed products on a single backend.
