Conductive Polymer Hybrid Aluminium Electrolytic Capacitors ZE / ZA / ZK Series

Lytic meets Polymer. It brings together low ESR characteristics of specialty polymer capacitor and the low leakage current of aluminium electrolytic capacitor. The series shows a compact design, high reliability of the specialty polymer capacitor and the safety of the aluminum electrolytic capacitor.

Polymer Capacitors: SP-Cap Polymer Aluminum

SP-Caps are Surface Mount Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors that use a conductive polymer as their electrolyte material. SP-Caps are primarily used as input and output capacitors for DC/DC converters due to their ultra low ESR values. Panasonic SP-Caps offer excellent performance for moderate to high capacitance and voltage values at low cost

OS-CON parts are characterized by a long life span and minimal changes in ESR throughout the entire rated temperature range. Ideal for applications that require the high-voltage, high-capacitance.

Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors

Electrolytic capacitors use an electrolyte to achieve a larger capacitance than other capacitor types. However, there are several drawbacks to this technology, including low rated ripple current, wide value tolerances, high ESR (equivalent series resistance) and a limited lifetime. A poorly chosen component costing cents can lead to a system failure just as surely as a complex ASIC or microprocessor. Therefore it is prudent to pay attention and give due diligence to the selection of the capacitor, just as any other component. Panasonic Surface Mount Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors and Leaded Radial Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors are available in a broad range of voltage ratings and capacitance values. Featuring low ESR, high ripple current, long service life and operating temperatures up to 125°C, they can be used in many applications including A/V, telecommunications, automotive and industrial control equipment.

Electric Double Layer Capacitors (Gold Capacitor): HL Capacitors

Electric double layer capacitors (EDLC) - also known as Gold Capacitors, have moved increasingly into research and development's focus recently because of their power delivery performance that perfectly fills the gap between electrolytic capacitors and traditional batteries. This attention is predominantly coming from applications in portable electronics devices, electric vehicles, bulk electricity storage at power stations and "load levelling" of renewable sources such as solar energy and wind power. The complex challenges of future decentralized energy supply can only be met on the basis of novel hybrid electrical storage technologies. EDLCs have high power density, faster charge/discharge capability, and wide operating temperature compared to batteries. Since they store energy electrostatically, they can pass through hundreds of thousands of charge-/discharge cycles without losing capacitance.

HL Series capacitors offer low resistance combined with guaranteed long life over a wide temperature range, down to -40degC and extending to +65degC. Panasonic HL Series gold capacitors are wound radial lead type devices, which achieve far better capacitance compared to aluminium electrolytic capacitors (up to 1,000 times greater) and superior charge and discharge performance compared with secondary batteries. The further benefit of a rapid change and discharge cycle, which can be performed over 100,000 times, makes Panasonic HL Series ELDCs ideal for applications such as backup power supplies for servers and storage devices, auxiliary power supplies for solar-powered products including street lighting, and driver-assist for motors and actuators in a variety of markets. Maximum operating voltage for the HL Series is 2.7VDC and nominal capacitance range 50 F to 100 F. These ELDCs are also guaranteed at temperatures as low as -40degC, where capacitance change is ± 30% of initial measured value at +20degC. and internal resistance ≤ 7 times of initial specified value. Both the 50F device and the 100F device in the HL Series are guaranteed for a life of 2,000 hours at +65degC. With large capacitance values due to the use of activated carbon for the electrode, HL Series EDLC "Gold Capacitors" sit between aluminium electrolytic capacitors and secondary battery cells in terms of capacitance and offer unique advantages over both, being highly-reliable with very rapid charging/discharging and virtually no limit on the number of charging cycles. As well as long operating life over low temperatures, HL Series components are RoHS compliant, so there are no recycling or accidental leakage issues.

Film Capacitor

Reliability and maintainability are two basic requirements for a proper operation of a system and is mainly related to the technological characteristics of the components composing it. Capacitors are widely used for dc links in power converters to balance the instantaneous power difference between the input source and output load, and minimize voltage variation in the dc link. Such configurations cover a wide range of power electronics applications, such as in wind turbines, photovoltaic systems, motor drives, electric vehicles and lighting systems. With more stringent reliability constrains brought by automotive, aerospace and energy industries, the design of dc links encounters the following challenges: a) capacitors are one kind of the stand-out components in terms of failure rate in field operation of power electronic systems b) cost reduction pressure from global competition dictates minimum design margin of capacitors without undue risk; c) capacitors are to be exposed to more harsh environments (e.g., high ambient temperature, high humidity, etc.) in emerging applications and d) constrains on volume and thermal dissipation of capacitors with the trends for high power density power electronic systems.

All these constrains are addressed by the Surface Mount Film capacitor portfolio of Panasonic which stand out due to following characteristics :

  • stable capacitance and temperature characteristics
  • tight tolerances
  • low ESR
  • low dissipation factors
  • no shock noise
  • no piezoelectric effect
  • no audible noise

Switches

Switches (Medical)

Engineers are constantly challenged to design leading-edge electronics that demonstrably improve costumers’ s experience in a cost-effective manner. From the electromechanical point of view it is important to design a human-to-machine interface which improves the device’s overall experience and to offer the user an intuitive understanding. Take health-care applications and wearables for example: In order to build high-performance products that are durable enough to withstand the challenging environments of medical applications, design engineers need to consider how each component will operate within each medical device. Key attributes for switches used in medical products include high reliability, miniature size, long cycle life, corrosion resistance against body fluids and the option for customization. Since contamination on surface and ingress of of contaminants represents key failure modes for switches, Tactile Switches for medical applications increasingly need to meet IP 67 standards for protection against dust and liquid infiltration. Today’s wearable devices and hearing aids nearly always require IP 67 tactile switches too that withstand exposure to sun screen, lotion and water. Most manufactures use for doing so a IP 67 measure membrane – which comes due to its design with a loss in switch feel since the silicone makes the switch feel less crisp. Panasonics IP 67 tactile switches are manufactured differently. Rather than bond a silicone membrane under the actuator, the company uses a new patented laser method which welds a nylon-based thin film over the actuator.

This new method has a clear advantage over the traditional membrane construction when it comes to switch feel and protection from loads.

Light Touch Switches (Including Automotive Use)

Panasonic Light Touch Switches, which are often referred to as tact or tactile switches in the industry, are momentary push-on switches to be used with a small current (rated 20mA and 15Vdc). They provide a unique sharp and clear click operational feel, have low contact resistance, small bouncing noise, high contact reliability and come in a wide selection of operating forces. As one of the top suppliers in the world, Panasonic also offers options such as super-thin, super-small, side-mounted, double-action, long travel (stroke), over travel, as well as surface-mount and J-bent terminal mounting options.

Detector Switches

Detector Switches are used to detect internal mechanical movements and convert those or human manual operations, such as the closing of a flip-phone, to electronic signals. In some applications Detector Switches have been used to replace Encoders as a lower cost solution. Detector Switches use a mechanical sliding spring design to ensure consistent signal output. They also have features that include long travel, thin profile, compact size, light weight, highly flexible actuation angles and surface mount or J-bent terminal mounting options

Panasonic ETQP Series: Metal Composite Power Choke Coil

Nowadays automotive design requirements are becoming more and more demanding: ECUs design have to fulfil more functionality in small size or package. In the meantime high power, high current, high efficiency, and low power consumption are required. To meet these challenging design requirements Panasonic has developed with its ETQP Series a perfect answer.

The ETQP-Series provides following key advantages:

  • Controlling the particle size of the metal powder material leads to high magnetic flux, high permeability and therefore to better DC and AC bias.
  • Thermal aging is prevented and high temperatures up to 160°C can be withstood.
  • Due to its monolithic structure and by reducing the magnetic flow path length, better electrical characteristics than ferrite can be fulfilled. Thereby a reduction in case size between 30-50% can be achieved.

Key Values:

  • Case Sizes: 5x5mm to 12x12mm
  • Inductance Values from 0.33uH to 100uH
  • DCR down to less than 1mR
  • Rated Currents up to 53.5A
  • Saturation Currents up to 84.5A

The most common definition for resistors defines resistors as a passive electrical component with the primary function to limit or regulate the flow of electric current so that the associated sophisticated parts can function properly. This makes them so important that it is virtually impossible to build an electronic circuit without involving resistors. The resistor has a higher resistance than the connecting leads what causes the reduced electrical current what that creates a voltage drop. This relation between electrical current, voltage and resistance is described by Ohm's Law Panasonic offers a wide range of Fixed Resistors such as Thick Film Chip Resistors, Thin Film, Current Sense, Anti-Sulfur, Anti-Surge, Metal Plate Shunt Resistor, Wide Terminal High Power Resistors, Resistor Arrays and Metal Film Chip Resistors. Panasonic's standard Thick Film Chip Resistors are offered in cases sizes from 01005 to 2512. Furthermore Panasonic's SMD Resistors use a soft termination structure for better solder joint reliability in order to minimize cracks in the solder fillet, caused by tough temperature cycle conditions.

Infrared Array Sensor Grid-EYE

1st SMT Thermopile Array Sensor - Grid-EYE

Years of continuous research in infrared sensing technology led to the development of a state-of-the-art thermopile sensor that features 64 thermopile elements in an 8 x 8 grid format.

Contrary to conventional thermal sensors that only measure temperature of a certain point-of-contact, Grid-EYE, based on Panasonic's MEMS technology, can measure temperature of the entire specified area without any contact; in other words, it is a "contact-less thermopile array sensor". 64 pixels yield accurate temperature measurement over a viewing angle of 60° provided by a silicon lens. Grid-EYE uses an I²C communication interface, enabling temperature measurements at speeds of 1 or 10 frames/sec. An interrupt function is also available.

Panasonic Introduces Soft-PGS, a Thermal Management Solution for Extremely Thin Spaces

200µm thickness guarantees thermal stability up to 400°C with thermal conductivity up to 400W/mK

Panasonic has launched a highly-compressible Thermal Interface Material (TIM) to reduce contact thermal resistance between rough surfaces in extremely thin spaces. Soft-PGS enhances the thermal coupling between heat producing devices (heat sources) and heat dissipation devices (the heat sinks).

Thermal Interface Material (TIM) is a key component in the majority of power electronic systems. Heat generated by semiconductors, has to be transferred to a heat sink and ultimately dissipated. Soft-PGS is a 200µm thick graphite sheet designed for use as a thermal interface material for IGBT modules. As Soft-PGS can be compressed by 40% it is an excellent solution for dramatically reducing thermal resistance between a heat sink and an IGBT module. The 200µm thick Soft-PGS sheet is easy to install, and has far lower labour and installation costs than thermal grease or phase change material. Soft-PGS guarantees thermo stability of up to 400°C and high reliability against intense heat cycles (-55°C to +150°C). Its thermal conductivity is guaranteed at 400W/mK for X-Y direction and at 30W/mK in Z direction. Panasonic offers a wide range of standard sheets for different IGBT modules from various suppliers.
