Satellite connectivity and next-generation platforms strengthen scalable IoT designs: Nordic portfolio at Rutronik extended by NTN, new series, and 5G eRedCap

03/12/2026 Product News

Nordic Semiconductor is accelerating its cellular IoT strategy with major portfolio expansions. In addition to enabling 3GPP-compliant Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity for the nRF9151, Nordic introduces two entirely new platform generations – the nRF92 Series and nRF93 Series – and announces future support for 5G eRedCap. The nRF9151 is already available at www.rutronik24.com, with the other announced solutions to follow shortly.

The nRF9151 will support 3GPP-compliant NTN connectivity, enabling communication not only via terrestrial cellular networks but also through LEO (Low Earth Orbit) and GEO (Geostationary Earth Orbit) satellites. This significantly expands IoT deployment scenarios, particularly for applications in remote or infrastructure-limited regions such as global asset tracking, maritime systems, agriculture, and large-scale monitoring. In addition, the nRF9151 will feature a sub-GHz fallback, allowing hybrid network architectures that combine cellular and alternative long-range connectivity options. Nordic has also announced the nRF91M1 module, further simplifying integration of nRF91 technology into new and existing designs.

With the introduction of the nRF92 Series, Nordic launches a completely new next-generation cellular IoT platform. The series is designed to deliver a smaller footprint, enhanced energy efficiency and extended feature integration. New capabilities include Wi-Fi-based positioning (Wi-Fi locationing) and the integration of the Nordic Axon™ NPU, enabling local AI processing directly on the device. This makes the nRF92 Series particularly suitable for advanced edge IoT applications where connectivity, positioning and on-device intelligence must operate together efficiently.

The newly announced nRF93 Series, including the nRF93M1 module, supports LTE Cat 1 bis, and targets applications requiring moderate data throughput combined with global coverage and optimized power consumption. It addresses use cases such as smart metering, industrial automation, telematics, and connected infrastructure.

Looking ahead, Nordic also announced support for 5G eRedCap (enhanced Reduced Capability). Considered the natural successor to legacy 4G IoT technologies such as LTE Cat 1 within the 5G ecosystem, eRedCap provides a migration path toward energy-efficient 5G-based IoT architectures with reduced complexity compared to full-scale 5G implementations.
