Bluetooth® evolves into a ranging technology
Bluetooth® is already available in virtually every mobile and connected device. With Channel Sounding, the technology now enables precise distance measurement between two devices – even indoors and in battery-powered applications.
For developers, this opens up new possibilities:
- Precise distance detection without additional wireless technologies
- Lower power consumption compared to alternative positioning approaches
- Reuse of existing Bluetooth® infrastructures
- Reduced system costs and simplified hardware architectures
- Future-proof designs based on the Bluetooth® 6.0 standard
As Bluetooth® 6.0-enabled smartphones become increasingly widespread, the market potential for corresponding applications continues to grow.
From concept to product in record time
To simplify adoption of this new technology, Nordic Semiconductor introduces the nRF54L15 Tag – a compact prototyping platform for battery-powered trackers, positioning solutions, and edge AI applications.
At its core is the ultra-low-power nRF54L15 SoC, supporting Bluetooth® LE, Matter, Thread, Zigbee, NFC, and proprietary 2.4 GHz protocols. Particularly relevant for Bluetooth® Channel Sounding are the integrated dual antennas, enabling robust and reliable distance estimation.
The nRF54L15 Tag has been specifically designed for the development of:
- Find My trackers
- Asset tags
- Smart locks and access control systems
- Wearables
- Smart home devices
- Industrial and medical applications
- More than positioning
Beyond Bluetooth® Channel Sounding, the platform is also well suited for modern edge AI applications. Integrated sensors, including an accelerometer, gyroscope, and environmental sensor, enable use cases such as gesture recognition in wearables and remote controls, anomaly detection for predictive maintenance, condition monitoring of equipment, and Matter-based smart home applications.
Combined with readily available AI models and comprehensive sensor capabilities, developers can evaluate new concepts immediately without first designing custom hardware.
Bluetooth® Channel Sounding: from feature to standard
While UWB will continue to deliver the highest levels of positioning accuracy, Bluetooth® Channel Sounding is already emerging as a potential de facto standard for energy-efficient distance measurement in short-range applications.
Its combination of low cost, excellent energy efficiency, and the massive installed base of Bluetooth® devices creates ideal conditions for rapid market adoption. With the nRF54L15 Tag, developers can start shaping this next generation of positioning solutions today.
Competitive advantage through faster development
The greatest value of the nRF54L15 Tag lies not in individual hardware features, but in its role as a development accelerator. Developers gain access to a ready-to-use platform for Bluetooth® 6.0 and Channel Sounding applications, significantly reducing design effort while shortening the time-to-market of new products.
