Optical Force™ SFH 7061 & AS7150 from ams OSRAM: Ultra-compact optical force sensing solution for intuitive human-machine interfaces now available at Rutronik

03/05/2026 Product News

With the Optical Force™ SFH 7061 and the analog frontend AS7150 from ams OSRAM, Rutronik expands its sensor portfolio with a highly integrated solution for optical force and touch sensing. Measuring only 1.8 × 1.0 × 0.5 mm, the Optical Frontend integrates an IR emitter, IR-sensitive photodiode, and optical barrier within an ultra-compact package. Combined with the 1.68 × 1.68 × 0.4 mm small AS7150, it enables flexible platform designs for next-generation user interfaces in consumer, industrial and digital health applications. The devices and the accompanying evaluation kit are available at www.rutronik24.com.

The SFH 7061 is the first device in a new family of Optical Frontend modules optimized for optical force and touch sensing. Within its extremely compact footprint, it integrates a 940 nm infrared emitter, an IR-sensitive photodiode, and a dedicated optical barrier to effectively suppress optical crosstalk. This high level of integration simplifies optical system design, reduces external components and ensures stable and reproducible signal performance.

Serving as the core of the discrete optical force sensing solution, the AS7150 analog frontend can flexibly connect up to three photodiodes and IR emitters, enabling a variety of optimized optical module configurations. Its ultra-low-power architecture, compact footprint and high configurability allow seamless integration into a wide range of product form factors.

Unlike conventional mechanical switches or capacitive touch solutions, Optical Force™ technology enables fully closed, minimalist surfaces without moving parts. The sensing elements can be placed behind glass, plastic or other cover materials, enabling precise detection of force and touch events while maintaining robust and durable designs. This opens up new degrees of freedom in product development – from seamless control surfaces to adaptive interaction concepts.

The technology represents a fundamental evolution in human-machine interaction: transforming control interfaces from static to smart and from fixed to fluid. For OEMs and Tier-1 manufacturers, it unlocks new differentiation opportunities in both exterior and interior design.
