Nordic Semiconductor has expanded its cellular IoT portfolio with the nRF93M1, an easy-to-use and compact, pre-certified LTE Cat 1 bis module designed for data-intensive IoT applications requiring either regional or even global cellular connectivity, low power consumption, and simplified development. The module combines LTE Cat 1 bis connectivity with integrated Wi-Fi and cellular-based location services, making it an attractive solution for asset tracking, industrial monitoring, smart metering, and connected devices.
The nRF93M1 delivers data rates of up to 10 Mbps downlink and 5 Mbps uplink while maintaining an optimized single-antenna design. Out of the box, it comes preloaded with Nordic firmware, including the LTE protocol stack and upper-layer networking functionality, significantly reducing development complexity and accelerating time-to-market. A key highlight of the module is its integrated Wi-Fi beacon receiver and cellular location capability, which seamlessly works with nRF Cloud services for indoor and outdoor positioning. In addition, the module supports security features such as hardware-anchored security, authenticated and encrypted firmware, and modern transport security standards including TLS 1.2, TLS 1.3, and DTLS 1.2. The nRF93M1 is designed to support regulatory security certification such as the CE RED radio equipment directive and the EU Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) cybersecurity regulation.
The nRF93M1 is available in both multi-regional and global variants, offering full pin and interface compatibility across versions. While the nRF93M1-LABA multi-regional version supports LTE bands for Europe, Asia, the middle East and Africa with corresponding certifications, the nRF93M1-LACA supports a comprehensive set of global LTE bands and certifications for worldwide deployments. Developers also benefit from flexible SIM options, including multi-SIM support, IoT eSIM (SGP.32), and Nordic’s integrated software SIM framework.

To help engineers quickly evaluate and prototype their cellular IoT applications, Nordic offers the nRF93M1 Development Kit (nRF93M1-DK). The kit provides an ideal platform for getting started with the new LTE Cat 1 bis module and accelerating proof-of-concept development.
