JAE offers a compact, shielded connector solution for this purpose with the DZ17 series. The series, which is compliant with IEC 63171-6, establishes a standardized connection between SPE devices and a single twisted-pair cable. Compared to four-pair Ethernet, the amount of copper in the cabling can be reduced by about a quarter. Power over Data Line (PoDL) enables the transmission of data and DC voltage via the same twisted pair, eliminating the need for additional power supply lines at the field level.
Benefits for developers include reduced installation space and easier integration
The DZ17 series includes PCB sockets, as well as various plug variants in straight and angled designs. In addition to solder terminals, an IDC variant is available for tool-free field assembly. Here, wires are inserted into the locator and made to contact without prior stripping. This reduces the number of steps required, simplifying assembly, particularly during on-site installation or small-batch production.
With a total length of around 25 mm, the straight connector is designed for devices with limited installation space. This compact interface gives developers greater freedom when designing small sensors, cameras, and communication devices. At the same time, the shielded design allows for use in industrial communication environments. A metal locking spring on the plug side increases the locking mechanism's mechanical robustness.
The benefits of standardization
The benefits include support for interoperable SPE network designs with the IEC 63171-6-compliant interface and the ability to create different board-to-cable and cable-to-cable configurations with the various plug and socket variants. Developers can leverage existing Ethernet architectures, tools, and expertise. In the long term, a standardized interface can be used across different product generations and applications, reducing dependence on application-specific connector solutions.
For SPE data rates up to the gigabit range
The two-pole DZ17 series supports SPE data rates up to the gigabit range and is compatible with IEEE 802.3cg (10BASE-T1L), IEEE 802.3bw (100BASE-T1), and IEEE 802.3bp (1000BASE-T1). It is rated for 4 A per contact and 60 VDC. It has a 1,000 VAC withstand voltage for one minute and an insulation resistance of at least 500 MΩ at 500 VDC. For the IDC version, wires from AWG 22 to AWG 26 can be used.
The specified operating temperature range is from -40 to 85 °C, and the mechanical service life is up to 1,000 mating cycles. The shielded version and PoDL compatibility allow for its use as a compact communication interface in industrial SPE systems.
Applications range from factory automation to smart buildings.
The DZ17 series is particularly suitable for applications requiring compact dimensions, low cable volume, and a standardized Ethernet connection. These include:
- Factory automation and industrial engineering: industrial sensors, decentralized control and monitoring devices, and compact communication modules
- Robotics and drive technology: robots and robotic peripherals, motors, actuators, and drives
- Machine vision and network cameras: compact camera systems with limited space for printed circuit boards, connectors, and cabling
- Building and infrastructure automation: building sensors and controllers, security and surveillance technology, and access control systems
- Industrial IoT: edge devices, embedded monitoring systems, and distributed intelligent field devices
- Internal Ethernet infrastructure: structured wired communication in factories, offices, and smart buildings
The advantages are particularly evident in systems with numerous distributed devices where the volume of cabling, weight, and installation effort add up across the entire facility. They are also evident in compact devices for which a conventional RJ45 interface and four-pair cabling are too bulky.
SPE is thus evolving from initial specialized applications into a standardized technology for Ethernet communication at the field level. Where compact, lightweight, and standardized wired communication is required, SPE can support a seamless network architecture from sensors and actuators to higher-level control and IT systems.
