About Nordic Semiconductor

Nordic Semiconductor (OSX:NOD) is a Norwegian fabless semiconductor company specializing in the wireless communication technology that powers the Internet of Things (IoT). Nordic was established in 1983 and now has more than 600 employees across the globe. The company pioneered ultra-low power (coin cell-powered) wireless from the early 2000s, and helped develop Bluetooth Low Energy, a rapidly growing, multi-vendor, short-range wireless technology widely adopted in the computer, gaming, wellbeing, mobile, consumer, healthcare, and automation sectors.

Today, the company’s products are used by the world’s leading brands and it is the market leader (measured by design certifications) with its award-winning, high-performance yet easy to design-in Bluetooth 5/Bluetooth Low Energy solutions. Nordic also offers proven products for other mature and up-and-coming wireless technologies—that will be ubiquitous in tomorrow’s smart homes, offices, and factories—including ANT+, Thread, Zigbee, and other 2.4-GHz protocols. The company is a member of the ANT+ Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, Thread Group, and Zigbee Alliance.

Nordic built its market reputation by supplying leading-edge wireless technologies supported by development tools that shield the designer from RF complexity, allowing anyone with a bright idea (even those with no RF-engineering knowledge) to build innovations based on the IoT platform. It is an approach the company has extended to its latest technology, cellular IoT—a low power wide area network solution, four years in development, based on NarrowBand IoT and LTE Cat M1 specifications—that leverages established 4G and 5G cellular infrastructure to dramatically multiply the penetration of the IoT.

The PPK2 supports both a source mode and an ampere meter mode.

In the source mode, shown as source measure unit (SMU) on the PCB, the PPK2 both supplies power and measures the current of the external device under test (DUT). The source mode has an on-board regulator capable of supplying up to 1A peak currents. Both modes support VCC levels between 0.8V and 5V. In the ampere meter mode, the DUT is powered by a separate power source.

Power Management IC

Product overview

The nPM1100 is a dedicated power management IC (PMIC) with dual-mode configurable buck regulator and integrated battery charger. It is designed as a complementary component to Nordic’s nRF52® Series and nRF53® Series System-on-Chips (SoCs) to ensure reliable power delivery and stable operation, whilst maximizing battery life through high efficiency and low quiescent currents.

The dual-mode regulator operates at up to 92% power conversion efficiency, prolonging battery life of any nRF52® or nRF53® SoC based application using a rechargeable battery. Hysteretic mode reduces current consumption for low load conditions, while PWM mode allows for cleaner power operation and better performance for higher loads. The regulator can deliver up to 150 mA, efficiently providing ample current for the nRF52® or nRF53® Series SoC plus additional circuitry.

The device can also be used as a generic PMIC for any rechargeable application. Its extremely compact form factor makes it ideal for advanced wearables, connected medical devices, and other size constrained applications. When optimized for size, PCB area usage can be as low as 23 mm2 with passive components included. This increases to approximately 27 mm2 when optimized for performance.
