The new products in the STM32L4+ family offer greater performance combined with lower power consumption. At a clock speed of 120MHz, they achieve 150 DMIPS or 233 points in EEMBC’s ULPMark™ CP. Up to two megabytes of flash and 640 kilobytes of RAM are available for a wide range of applications.

The integrated graphics accelerator with DSI interface permits the use of high-resolution right-angled or round TFT displays. Compatibility with existing development environments is as much a given as the still very low power consumption and the numerous ultra-low-power modes.

This makes the STM32L4+ family ideal for wearables such as fitness trackers, smartwatches, smaller medical products, smart meters, and smart industrial sensors. The MCUs remain operational within a temperature range of between -40 and +125 degrees Celsius – just in case you ever feel like doing yoga in the Antarctic or going jogging through the Sahara.

One typical use for the STM32L4+ MCUs is in the Fitbit Charge2 wristband tracker. It measures a number of fitness activities ranging from the number of steps taken and calories consumed to the number of floors climbed. The Fitbit also informs the user of missed calls, evaluates sleep patterns, and has a battery life of between seven and ten days thanks to the STM32L4+ MCU.
