One of the most livable cities in the world is located... in the southwest of Germany: Freiburg im Breisgau. The idyllic location at the foot of the southern Black Forest and the picturesque old town certainly play an important role. But that is by no means all that makes this city so livable and charming!

Of the 230,000 inhabitants of Germany's southernmost “Big City” 30,000 are students - another reason why, despite all the traditional beauty, there's a lot going on. Even though public life in times of corona is unfortunately interrupted - as in many parts of the world -, it is worthwhile to have the city on your list for future trips. A special attraction is the old town (Altstadt), famous for the Freiburg Minster (Freiburger Münster). The construction period lasted from 1200 to 1513: The cathedral was begun in the Romantic style and completed more than 300 years later in the high and late Gothic styles.

Another famous Freiburg attraction are the "Bächle" (brooks), which flow almost through the entire old town. These artificially created waterways are fed by the waters of the river Dreisam and are almost 16 km long! The first Bächle were already built about 800 years ago and to this day they delight residents and tourists alike - especially when it gets a little warmer in summer. But beware, there’s a trap! If someone should step into the water by mistake, a Freiburg native will be your future spouse. At least according to folklore - what your current partner (if you have one) thinks about that remains to be seen. Not only a funny anecdote, but a fact is that in the waters of the Dreisam a crocodile can be found. Why not go on a search?

Freiburg is known for its rather liberal spirit, not only because of the university and its numerous research institutions. Moreover, topics such as environmental protection and sustainability have long played an important role in the city and are important to its inhabitants. The Green Party is the strongest political force, and the Vauban district, built in the 1990s on the site of former barracks, is considered an ecological model project. There are green spaces and parks everywhere and the density of cars in the city center is rather low. Bicycles are one of the main means of transportation, although a considerable difference in altitude must be overcome in the Freiburg city area. From the lowest point (196 meters above sea level) to the highest point - the Schauinsland summit at 1,284 meters above sea level - the difference in altitude is over 1,000 meters! It is not surprising that the playing field in the Black Forest Stadium, home to the popular soccer club SC Freiburg, has a one-meter drop from goal to goal.

By the way, our Rutronik office in Freiburg has this wonderful suggestion if you want to escape the hustle and bustle of the old town for a few hours: Get on a mountain bike and then head off to the Rosskopfturm! Here you will be rewarded for your efforts with the best view of Freiburg, the Dreisamtal and the Black Forest. Ideal for taking a deep breath and letting nature soothe you.
Another suggestion, especially if you want a little more “action”, are the banks of the Dreisam river: A green oasis, a welcome cool-down in the middle of summer and always a meeting point for relaxed people. As early as 1839, a contemporary author observed: "The Freiburg resident is positive, cheerful, comfortable and hospitable; he enjoys life with all his heart and soul, so that it is not uncommon for the lust for life to get out of hand". Of course, you don't have to overdo it and whoever wants to escape from the hustle and bustle will find numerous destinations around Freiburg to relax. Check out the surrounding Breisgau area, the hills of the Black Forest or simply cross the river Rhine to see the French Vosges or go south to nearby Switzerland - Freiburg lies in the so-called "three-country corner"!
