The new STM8S001 microcontroller extended ST's product portfolio in smaller pin packages. STM8S001 is available in a small industry-standard SO8 package for optimization in core processing speed, system control, memory size, communication peripherals, and analog functions offering the best price/performance ratio among all our 8bit microcontrollers.
The STM8S001J3 8bit microcontrollers offer 8KB of Flash program memory, plus integrated true data EEPROM. It is referred to as low-density device in the STM8S microcontroller family.
The STM8S001J3 device provides the following benefits: performance, robustness and reduced system cost. Device performance and robustness are ensured by true data EEPROM supporting up to 100000 write/erase cycles, advanced core and peripherals made in a state-of-the-art technology at 16MHz clock frequency, robust I/O's, independent watchdogs with separate clock source, and a clock security system.
The system cost is reduced thanks to a high system integration level with internal clock oscillators, watchdog, and brown-out reset.
Microcontroller-based applications become more and more complex, which may lead to conclusion, that designers constantly need microcontrollers with more performance, bigger memory and richer set of peripherals. This is only partially truth, because there is still huge number of applications, which require simple tasks from microcontroller. For all kind of such applications 8bit microcontrollers like STM8 family will do the job as good as highly sophisticated 32bit microcontrollers.
STM8 family is worth remembering, because it is a complete product platform. Three different subfamilies (STM8S, STM8L and STM8A) contain more than 130 different part numbers and they can address wide range of applications. In addition there is rich ecosystem of tools, which help with application development. This ecosystem contains hardware tools (boards, programming/debugging probes) and software tools (IDEs, compilers, PC applications, peripheral libraries and code examples).
New STM8S001J3 reshapes STM8 portfolio by adding a first member in 8pin package. The key features of this device are: low cost (the lowest in whole family), full set of standard peripherals like ADC, GPIO's, communication interfaces (all multiplexed on 5 pins), wide supply range (suitable for both 3.3 and 5V levels), small dimensions of package and easy assembling.
There is a huge amount of easy but useful possible applications for the STM8S001. The STM8S001 Rutronik Eval Board for example can cover the following applications. Those Applications can also be combined with the usage of two or more STM8S001:
