IoT evaluation environment

Customized prototyping as easy as plug & play

If everything in this increasingly digitalized world is supposed to get easier and faster, why should then the same not also apply to prototyping? Now that "smart" is taking our homes and work places by storm, IoT applications multiply as one speaks. And as a matter of fact more variety leads to more complexity. But no longer for development and evaluation environments. With Infineon's Shield2Go boards and the My IoT adapter prototyping becomes as easy as plug & play. Why this concept reduces your time to market, maximizes flexibility, and leaves you with lower cost? The right combination of hardware from Infineon and software for Arduino makes the difference. Continue reading to gain an all-embracing insight into the new customized prototyping.

Plug & play prototyping – The concept

(shortens the time to market for those with limited resources)

Particularly for the start-up designer community with limited resources facing the challenge of having to compete with industry giants Infineon's new prototyping concept will be game-changing. The formula is simple as it builds on the plug&play-approach: the boards are reusable, flexibly combinable, and hence allow for a fast and efficient set-up of the demonstration and evaluation environment. All that is needed: a hard- and software package composed of Infineon's Shield2Go boards and the My IoT adapter complemented by software for Arduino.

Now designers can accelerate the development of their own customized system solutions by selecting and combining Shield2Go boards in multiple ways based on their needs and use cases. The Shield2Go boards are equipped with a particular type of featured Infineon components. They provide a standardized form factor and pin layout for fast orientation. In addition, the boards have solderless connectors which allow designers to stack the boards instead of soldering. A dedicated ready-to-use, free of charge Arduino library for each Shield2Go offers the software necessary to fully evaluate the intended designs and functionalities.

My IoT adapter boards enable designers to combine the Shield2Go boards into a system and to easily connect to external systems.

Needless to say, this compound of flexible hardware components and accompanying software speeds up the prototyping process. Turning back to the beginning, faster prototyping results in faster time to market, what eventually translates into your competitive advantage. Team-up with Infineon now!

Modularity – The essence of fast, flexible, easy prototyping

(systems consisting of reusable, flexibly combinable hardware blocks)

Probably all of us remember playing with toy building bricks. Small colorful building blocks flexibly combinable, making it easy and fast to come up with ever new constructs. Each of them reusable as often as new ideas pop up in one's mind. Exactly this is what we at Infineon intended to achieve with our modular prototyping concept.

Hardware

The hardware consists of so called Shield2Go boards which form the reusable building blocks. They vary based on the Infineon product they are equipped with. Currently available are those with a security or a sensor component. Also on offer is a 2Go kit featuring a microcontroller. Fast orientation is the result of the standardized form factor and pin layout. Designers can stack the boards instead of soldering them thanks to the solderless connectors used.

In order to enable you to develop your own IoT systems by combining Shield2Go boards Infineon introduces its My IoT adapter. Combined with other boards (i.e. external hardware solutions like the popular IoT hardware platforms, Arduino and Raspberry Pi) it provides connectivity. All Shield2Go boards share a common pin out design, i.e. pins are hard coded to specific functions like SPI or I2C. This enables a generic PCB evaluation board design for Infineon's Shield2Go portfolio.

Software

Even the best hardware cannot come to life without proper software. Each IoT application so to speak needs a brain turning instructions given into actions expected. To keep it as simple as possible, Infineon uses Arduino, the open-source electronics platform based on easy-to-use hardware and software. For each of Infineon's Shield2Go boards exists a dedicated ready-to-use, free software library for Arduino. Just a few clicks to install the library in the Arduino IDE separate you from assigning the respective library to your project.

Every Shield2Go is directly compatible with Infineon's XMC™ 2Go evaluation board. Hence, the recommended quick start is to use an XMC™ 2Go for evaluation. After installing the XMC-for-Arduino the named evaluation board can instantly be used by plugging the Shield2Go board onto it. As shown in below example where the DPS310 Pressure Shield2Go is being plugged onto the XMC™ 2Go:
